The Kentucky Medigap birthday rule allows Medigap enrollees to switch to a different insurance company for the same plan within 60 days of their birthday:
- When it took effect: The rule took effect on January 1, 2024.
- How it works: Enrollees can apply to switch to a different insurer for the same plan they currently have. They can't change coverage, but they can switch to a cheaper plan without a medical screening or waiting period.
- Who can qualify: To qualify, enrollees must already have a Medigap plan.
- What's not allowed: Enrollees can't change coverage during the birthday rule period. For example, if an enrollee has Medicare Supplement Plan F, they must keep those benefits when switching to a new carrier.
The birthday rule is a "guaranteed issue" period, which means that companies must provide the option to switch plans. It's not contingent on age.
